The lower land of either side on the Nile is known as the floodplain and is the most fertile land in Egypt. Each year the Nile would flood between July and October renewing the fertility of this land as the receding waters deposited rich silt. When the flooding began to go down in October, it was time to plant. The annual flood or "Inundation" was so important for the Egyptians that they named one of their seasons for it. Above the floodplain was the low desert which was not watered by the Nile and therefore not used for crops.

La tierra más baja de cualquier lado del Nilo es conocida como la tierra inundada y es la tierra más fértil en Egipto. Cada año el Nilo se inundaría entre Julio y Octubre, renovando la fertilidad de esta tierra ya que las aguas que retrocedían depositaban cieno rico. Cuando la inundación comenzaba a bajar en Octubre, era tiempo para plantar. La inundación anual era tan importante para los Egipcios que nombraron una de sus estaciones para ella. Sobre la tierra inundada estaba el desierto bajo, que no era regado por el Nilo y, consecuentemente, no era utilizado para cosechar.

The waters of the Nile no longer flood as they did in ancient times but the fields are still irrigated with its water. The fertile land near the river is used to grow crops for consumption and export. A farmer works in the field on the road from Cairo to Memphis.
