The pyramids are one of the earth's features that astronauts enjoy looking for from space. This image, taken 15 August, 2001, shows in detail the Giza plateau as captured from a manned spacecraft. The three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaur are easily seen by the shadows they cast, although the Sphinx itself cannot be. Sets of three smaller queens’ pyramids can be seen to the east of the Pyramid of Khufu and south of the Pyramid of Menkaure. The light-colored causeway stretching from the Mortuary Temple at the Pyramid of Khafre to the Valley Temple near the Sphinx (arrow) can also be seen. The darker areas in the photograph are suburbs of modern Cairo which has expanded to meet the ancient monuments of its past.

Las pirámides son uno de los aspectos de la tierra que astronautas gozan de buscar del espacio. Esta imagen, tomado el 15 de agosto de 2001, muestra en detalla la meseta de Giza capturado de una nave espacial tripulada. Las tres gran pirámides de Khufu, Khafre y Menkaur son vistos fácilmente por las sombras que ellos lanzan, aunque la Esfinge que él mismo razón no se pueda ver. We can only imagine what the pyramids were like with their shining casing of white limestone, which must have reflected the sunlight like beacons. The three pyramids were built by father, son and grandson - the Pharaohs Khufu (Cheops), Khafre (Chepren) and Menkaure (Mycerinus). (The Greek names by which the pharaohs were known are given in parenthesis.) Today the city of Cairo has advanced to the edge of the desert and can be seen in this photograph. A ray of sunlight is seen over the Great Pyramid of Khufu or Cheops, as this Pharaoh was called in Greek. It is difficult to show the sheer size of this monument. Originally the pyramid was 146 meters high but over the centuries has been reduced in height by 9 meters. Experts estimate that it was built of approximately 2,300,000 limestone blocks, each weighing an average of 2.5 tons. Originally it was faced with brilliant white limestone. The outer casing was stripped away over many years and used in other building projects.

Un rayo de la luz del sol se ve sobre la Gran Pirámide de Khufu o Keops, como este Faraón fue llamado en griego. Es difícil de mostrar el tamaño completo de este monumento.
