In 1954 an underground vault was discovered with 1224 pieces of polished cedar inside. Assembling the pieces using traditional techniques took thirteen years. This magnificent solar boat was the result. This may have been a funeral barge or a boat for the Pharaoh to use in the afterlife. Experts thought there should be two such boats, one for day and one for night. A second boat pit was located but not excavated.
