Located at the foot of the Citadel, the Mosque of Sultan Hassan, on the left, is a magnificent building considered to be one of the masterpieces of Islamic architecture and was a symbol of the architecture of the Mamelukes. It was built between 1356 and 1363 by Sultan Hassan, who came to the throne at the age of 13, was deposed, reinstated three times, and then assassinated before it was completed. From the outside it is austere and bare, echoing the look of the Citadel. On the right is the mosque of El Refaey.
Localizado al pie de la Ciudadela, la Mezquita de Sultán Hassan, a la izquierda, es un edificio magnífico consideró uno de las obras maestras de la arquitectura Islámica y un símbolo de la arquitectura del Mamelukes. Se construyó entre 1356 y 1363 por Sultán Hassan, que vino al trono a los 13 años, se depuso, fue reintegrado tres veces, y entonces asesinado antes que la mezquita se completó. Del exterior es austero y descubierto, resonando la mirada de la Ciudadela. En el derecho es la mezquita de El Refaey.

Sultan Hassan used his enormous wealth to build this magnificent mosque which was to also be his tomb. Marble, of many different shades, was used throughout the mosque, many times in intricate inlaid designs. The black and white stripes showed the influence of Muslim Spain. The doors flanking the prayer niche were inlaid with gold and silver. The entrance to the mosque is dark and recessed and one enters the courtyard through a passage that resembles a fortress tunnel. Sultán Hassan utilizó su enorme riqueza para construir esta mezquita magnífica que debía ser también su tumba. El mármol, de muchas tonos diferentes, se utilizó a través de la mezquita, muchos veces en diseños embutidos complejos. Las rayas blanquinegras mostraron la influencia de la España musulmana. Las puertas que flanquean el nicho de la oración estaban embutidas con oro y plata. La entrada a la mezquita es oscura y uno entra el patio por un pasaje que se parece a un túnel de fortaleza. |
The mosque was never completely finished and the sultan was never buried inside it. Intrigue in the city caused the downfall of Sultan Hassan who was hunted down, captured, put to death and buried elsewhere. However, his mosque is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. In this photograph we can begin to appreicate the finely decorated cupola with its carved stalactites. La mezquita nunca se terminó completamente y el sultán nunca fue enterrado dentro. La intriga en la ciudad causó la caída de Sultán Hassan quien se buscó, capturó, puso a la muerte y fui enterrado en otra parte.
