In the courtyard there is a large ablution fountain with a spherical dome resting on slender marble columns. In this delightful painting by Edward A. Goodall (1819-1908) we see the courtyard and fountain of the mosque, little changed from the year it was painted in 1870.

A favorite of artists, the courtyard was also painted by David Roberts in 1838. The building complex contained four complete apartment buildings to provide free housing for students as well as teachers, prayer leaders, Koran readers, prayer callers, calligraphers and a professional incense burner. Each of the four main Sunni sects had its own school while, at the same time, sharing the mosque. The dormitories were six floors high and placed at the corners of the vast central courtyard.

El complejo del edificio contenía cuatro edificios completos de apartamentos entregados gratis a los estudiantes así como maestros, líderes de oración, lectores de Corán, personas que llaman al oración, los calígrafos y un incensario profesional.
