The Unfinished Obelisk at Aswan     Obelisco Inacabado en Asuán |
![]() |
The quarries in Aswan were the main source of granite for ancient Egypt's builders as this stone is only found in the southern region. It is from quarries such as these that magnificent obelisks and stones for statues and embellishing temples and pyramids were cut. Unfortunately a flaw appeared in this stone and it was abandoned where it lay. |
|
Had the flaw not appeared, this would have been the heaviest piece of stone ever cut. From Aswan the stone would have been transported by boat to the site where it was to be used. Although here are no indications where it would have been placed, much has been about ancient stone cutting techniques from it.
