Thoth, the god of writing, the teacher of men, record-keeper and mediator, is represented on the left. Hieroglyphs were called the "god's words" and were therefore of a divine nature. Thoth is represented as a man with the head of an ibis. He holds a scribe's palette and stylus. He can also be represented as an ibis or a baboon.

Horus is represented on the right in his most common form of a man with a falcon's head. He is also represented as a falcon, a lion with the head of a falcon or a sphinx. An important god with many forms, Horus is regarded as the specific patron of the living ruler.

Sobek represented the might of the pharaoh. The crocodile was a dangerous animal and a symbol of disorder; ferocious and quick moving, its gaping jaws were a sign of aggression. However the crocodile also emerged from the waters like the sun god himself, facing east to bask in the sun as though paying homage to the diety. Sobek is represented as crocodile, a man with the head of a crocodile, or a mummified crocodile.

This relief also shows Horus and Thoth pouring the signs of life and power over the pharaoh. Horus is the falcon headed god, who is the pharaoh’s protector. The ibis headed god is Thoth, the god of knowledge.
