Luxor is the location of the great necropolis known as the Valley of the Kings. By using the full detail in one of the space station photographs (circled), we can see the light colors exposed from archaeological excavation. The valley is a narrow, easily defended ravine where the plateau extends closest to the Nile and to the city of Luxor. Possibly more important was the valley’s symbolic location on the west side of the Nile in the direction of the setting sun, which was associated with the afterlife. The sun passed over the pharaoh’s mortuary temple, built for their cult on the floodplain near Thebes, and then over the pharaoh’s tomb in the valley, a symbolically important connection. Included in standard tours to Egypt, the Valley of the Kings was the resting place of Egypt’s pharaohs from Thutmosis I to Rameses X or XI. The great wealth buried in the royal tombs was to be hidden by the harsh landscape as the great kings of Egypt continued their journeys into everlasting life.

However, the isolation and stark location of the valley did not keep it safe. All the tombs except one were robbed of their treasures in antiquity. The mummies of the great kings were often moved about, sometimes by other rulers looking for a good resting place for themselves, and other times by priests trying to keep the sacred bodies safe from even further desecration.

Other dangers lay within the rock itself. Different qualities of limestone and layers of shale meant that the tombs would not be safe from the elements for all eternity. The shale especially proved to be a problem as it expands when it comes into contact with water. Periodically floods raged through the valley bringing havoc and destruction.

In this reproduction of the "Valley of the Kings" by David Roberts, across the Nile from Luxor, the entrances to many of the underground royal tombs can be seen, but Tutankamun's tomb would not be discovered for many years to come. There are no crowds of tourists or souvenir vendors to disturb the peace of the valley.

In ancient times, the entrances to the tombs were hidden in hopes that tomb robbers could not find the treasure inside. Today’s entrances are guarded by caretakers who are only part of the people dedicated to the preservation of one of humanity’s greatest treasures.
