At any one point in time, some of the tombs will be closed to the public. This is in accordance to a policy of rotation which permits the tombs a resting period – the carbon dioxide which we breathe out is detrimental to the reliefs. In addition photography is no longer allowed inside the tombs. To discourage people from lingering inside the tombs, your guide will not be permitted to lecture or explain what you are looking at. This can make seeing the tombs somewhat frustrating. It is to prepare in advance so that you can more fully appreciate the great accomplishments of the tomb builders.

This is the staircase leading to the entrance of the tomb of Thutmosis III, which in 2005 was closed. However, on your tour you may have the opportunity to explore it. Thutmosis III was still a young child when his father died; therefore his stepmother Hatshepsut initially acted as regent. She went on to usurp his position and became pharaoh of Egypt, even wearing the ceremonial beard at times. Although he did not become pharaoh until her death twenty years later, Thutmosis III became a great military leader and an able ruler of Egypt. The walls of the tombs were painted and sculpted with magnificent murals depicting scenes of the gods and the pharaoh. This is a reproduction of a scene in the tomb of Thutmosis III from "The Book of the Dead and Elysian Fields" which was published in Egypt sometime between the First and Second World Wars. In this scene, Nephthys, the sister of Isis, is represented. |
