Gurna and the Tombs of the Nobles
Some houses are unused.

We came here to visit the Tombs of the Nobles and did not spend enough time exploring the village. It seemed deserted, although as soon as our taxi stopped, there was someone to guide us to the tombs. Other than our guide and the attendants at the tombs, we saw only two other people, both selling souvenirs. As we walked we did see some interesting insights into life in the village.

A building in gurna Looking into a building

As wood is scarce and therefore be expensive, mud has been widely and successfully used for building as it was in ancient Egypt. The thick walls of these houses afford protection from the baking sun and from chill winter evenings.

We look into the building for an intriguing glimpse into a Qurna dwelling. Inside there is a simple but welcoming wooden bench and clay jugs. Looking closely at the wall behind, we can barely make out traces of a painted bird.
