Located on the West Bank at Luxor, the Medinet Habu was not only a religious site, but an economic center of Thebes for several centuries. Although the funerary temple of Rameses III overshadows other buildings, there were also temples constructed by Hatshepsut and Thutmosis III in addition to storage rooms and workshops. When workmen from the Valley of the Kings went on strike, they came to Medinet Habu to demand payment. The complex also provided refuge for inhabitants in the area during periods of civil strife.

The impressive pylons of the funerary temple of Rameses III include giant images of the king in the traditional pose of destroying his enemies. There would have been four flagpoles in front of the pylons.

At Medinet Habu you can see some of the colors with which the entire temple would have glowed.

A beautifully preserved relief inside the temple. This is in the chapel of Amenerdis I, one of the divine Adoratrices of the 25th and 26th dynasties, who nominally ruled Upper Egypt on behalf of the king.

In the relief on the left you can see the deeply engraved reliefs. This was done to prevent the recycling by differen pharaohs which was carried on so frequently. On the right we can see the care with which the stonework has been reconstructed.

The caretaker was keen that we see this example of a royal toilet of the squat type. This kind of facility is quite similar to those still found in many restrooms in Egypt.
