Although Abydos is not included on many standard tours, it is truly worth staying an extra day in Luxor so that you can visit it and perhaps the Temple at Dendara. To reach it, you will have to travel in a convoy and this will restrict somewhat the time you can spend here, but the effort is worthwhile as the great Temple of Seti I is one of Egypt’s most beautiful. Built in an L-shape, it is dedicated to the six major gods – Osiris, Isis and Horus, Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty and Ptah as well as to Seti himself.

The first two pylons of the Abydos Temple have been destroyed. The entrance now consists of twelve pillars that originally were the second portico. Each of the twelve pillars shows Rameses II being embraced by different gods.

The first hypostyle hall was built by Rameses II. It has twelve columns with lotus bud capitals. Before this part of the temple was added there were seven doors leading to seven processional paths, one for each sanctuary. Most of these were closed off.

As you walk through the dimly lit second hypostyle hall, you can feel the mystery and pageantry that was an Egyptian temple. The hall contains 36 lotus-bud columns which are carefully aligned to provide easy access to the sanctuaries. The raised reliefs in this section of the temple are of the highest quality and can be seen at The Egypt Archives.
