| From Cairo we traveled to Aswan, Egypt's southernmost city, which, in ancient times, was the gateway to Africa and the land of Nubia. It was a garrison town from which the pharaoh's soldiers defended the southern frontier. It was also a crossroads for caravan routes and the entry point for the treasures which came from Nubia - gold, spices, obsidian, ebony and exotic creatures such as monkeys. The Nile is magical here and many travelers enjoy nothing so much as watching it flow past, especially as the sun is setting. It is easy to find your way around as there are only three main streets and most of the city is parallel to the Nile. Aswan is also the place to arrange tours to Abu Simbel, the Temple of Isis on the island of Philae and other temples such as Kalabsha. It is a wonderfully colorful place to shop and its souqs provide an exotic atmosphere yet are much less crowded than in Cairo's Khan-el-Kahlil. A felucca is a traditional Nile sailboat without a motor and without a keel. It has a heavy center plate which can be raised in the shallows. These are not the same type of sailboats which would have sailed the river in Pharaonic times. Ancient Egypt boats would have had square sails not triangular ones as feluccas do. They would not be as efficient sailing against the wind and would have needed a tow from the banks. the lateen or triangular sail is a later development, perhaps from the 9th century AD.

Your felucca ride may include sailing past the famed Old Cataract Hotel, seen here overlooking the Nile. With splendid views of across the Nile and the southern tip of Elephantine Island to the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan, it is a landmark. Agatha Christie, the author of many detective stories, including Death on the Nile, did some writing here. The hotel also appears in the movie version of the book.
