Cairo is a vibrant, confusing city with a population of approximately nineteen million people. It is the largest city in Africa and in the Islamic world. Densely overpopulated, there are vivid contrasts between the old and the new. Visitors can see the Citadel high on its hill overlooking the city skyline if no longer dominating its life. From certain points in the city you can see the pyramids at Giza, the last of the seven wonders of the ancient world still standing. Lowering your eyes, you then encounter Cairo's traffic. Over half the country's cars reside in Cairo. All of them seemingly come equipped with excellent horns which their drivers do not hesitate to use.

Cairo es una ciudad vibrante y confusa con una población de aproximadamente diecinueve millones de personas. Es la ciudad más grande en África y en el mundo Islámico. Densamente superpoblado, hay contrastes vívidos entre el viejo y el nuevo. Los visitantes pueden ver la Ciudadela alto en su colina, impotente pero que no domino mas la ciudad. Not a pharaonic city, Cairo was constructed under the Fatimids in the 10th century and was originally named El-Qahira, the victorious one, for the planet Mars which was in the ascendant at the time. Europeans understood the name as Cairo and so it eventually became known. The city has been invaded, has declined, has regained its glory and prominence and continues to grow at a phenomenal rate.

No era una ciudad faraónica, Cairo se construyó bajo el Fatimids en el siglo X y fue denominado originalmente El-Qahira, el victorioso, para el planeta Marte que estaba en el ascendiente en este tiempo.
