Of the great city of Memphis founded by the Pharaoh Menes - Narmer, the king who unified Upper and Lower Egypt around 3100 BC, nothing remains. The city is said to have been filled with palaces, gardens and temples. Today the visitor can only see a few statues which remain from Pharaonic times. This is one of the statues of Rameses II on display in the open-air museum.

Rameses II reigned for sixty-seven years. During his reign he carried out a vast building program: the Ramesseum in Luxor, the temples at Abu Simbel, and many others. He also modified and added to temples built by earlier Pharaohs.

Rameses II also had many statues of himself made and placed in temples in all parts of the country. All of Egypt knew the power of the great Pharaoh and could feel the protection his reign provided.

This is a New Kingdon sphinx. A sphinx is a figure with the body of a lion in a crouching position with paws outstretched and a head symbolizing the pharaoh of the period. However, in this case it is not clear which pharaoh commissioned this sphinx.

The New Kingdom was the time between 1150 and 1290 BC and is regarded as the golden age of the pharaohs. During this period many incredible monuments were built, particularly to celebrate the god Amun-Ra who combined the Theban god Amun and the great sun god Ra.

This great statue of Rameses II was one of two which would have stood at the entrance of one of Memphis' great temples. While the other stands in Cairo, this one lies in a pavilion at Memphis. Originally about 12 meters long (approximately 40 feet), the statue's legs were damaged and the feet are now missing.
Esta gran estatua de Rameses II era una de dos que se hubiesen parado en la entrada de uno de los grandes templos de Menfis. Mientras que la otra se encuentra en Cairo, ésta esta en un pabellón en Menfis. Originalmente de unos 12 metros de largo (aproximadamente 40 pies), las piernas de la estatua se dañaron y los pies se han perdido.
